How to Connect Canvas to ChatGPT: What Works, What Breaks Canvas Rules, and the Steps

ChatGPT can't sign in to Canvas for you, and the popular access-token workaround runs into Instructure's own rules. Here's what does work, which ChatGPT plans can add a custom MCP server, and the current steps.

Key takeaways

  • Instructure's OpenAI partnership puts teacher-built AI assignments inside Canvas. To get your own courses into ChatGPT, you add an MCP connector.
  • Instructure's guide says making your own Canvas token to paste into an app breaks Canvas API policy, and student tokens expire after 30 days.
  • In ChatGPT on the web: Plugins, the plus button, Add custom MCP server. OpenAI documents it for Business and Enterprise/Edu, and read/fetch only on Pro.
  • ChatGPT's canvas was a writing and coding editor, not Canvas LMS, and OpenAI took it out of its current models in May 2026.
  • Connecting changes what ChatGPT can see, not what your course allows. The syllabus still decides.

Yes, you can connect Canvas to ChatGPT, but not with a switch inside either app. The partnership Instructure and OpenAI announced on July 23, 2025 doesn't do it: it lets teachers build AI conversations into Canvas assignments, which you use inside Canvas, and Instructure says learner information isn't shared with OpenAI (Instructure). Your own ChatGPT still knows nothing about your courses.

What a student can do is give ChatGPT a connector that already holds their Canvas data. ChatGPT talks to connectors through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). In OpenAI's current help article, you add one under Plugins, on the web only, and only some plans get the option (OpenAI Help Center).

This guide covers the three routes that work, why the "make a Canvas API token" route most tutorials suggest is a poor fit for students by Instructure's own rules, which ChatGPT plans can add a connector, and the exact steps.

Can you connect Canvas to ChatGPT?

Yes, through something in between. Your Canvas pages sit behind your school's login, and ChatGPT can't sign in there for you. Three kinds of bridge exist:

RouteWhat you needWhat ChatGPT can seeThe catch
An AI tool your school runsYour school to have turned one onWhatever the tool shows inside CanvasIt lives in Canvas, not in your ChatGPT, and only if your school set it up
Your own Canvas MCP server or custom GPTA Canvas access token and some setupAnything your Canvas account can reachInstructure's guide says a self-made token pasted into an app breaks Canvas API policy; student tokens last 30 days; custom GPTs retire December 11, 2026
A study app that already syncs Canvas, connected over MCPAn account with that app and a ChatGPT plan that can add custom MCP serversWhat that app's tools exposeYou set it up on the web, and the app decides what's shared

Route 1: an AI tool your school already runs

Instructure's LLM-Enabled Assignment is built by your teacher, who decides how the AI talks to you; you then have the conversation inside Canvas, where your teacher can review it. If a course uses one, it appears as an assignment. It helps with that assignment, not with your whole semester, and it doesn't make your ChatGPT aware of your deadlines.

Instructure is also experimenting with two-way MCP support, which would let the AI agents an institution prefers work with Canvas, starting with a first group of institutions and partners (Instructure). That's your school's decision, not a setting a student can switch on.

Route 2: your own server, built on a Canvas token

Community Canvas MCP servers and OpenAI's own Canvas recipe for custom GPTs start the same way: create an access token in Canvas and paste it into the tool. OpenAI marks that recipe as archived, and it's written for developers (OpenAI Cookbook). Custom GPTs themselves are scheduled to retire on December 11, 2026, and a GPT's custom actions don't carry over when it's migrated to a plugin (OpenAI Help Center). Our guide to Canvas MCP servers compares the community servers and what each one can do; the next sections explain why a student should think twice.

Route 3: a study app that already has your classes

Some study apps sync Canvas themselves and offer an MCP server, so ChatGPT asks the app instead of asking Canvas. Lykke works this way: the Lykke Chrome extension syncs your Canvas courses when you open Canvas, and Lykke's MCP server hands ChatGPT your classes with no Canvas API token. The step-by-step version is below.

ChatGPT's canvas is not Canvas LMS

Many searches for "ChatGPT canvas" are about something else. OpenAI introduced canvas on October 3, 2024, as a separate window where you and ChatGPT edit a piece of writing or code side by side (OpenAI). It has no connection to Canvas, the learning management system from Instructure that your school uses.

That editor is also on its way out. On May 28, 2026, OpenAI removed canvas from GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.5 Thinking and moved writing and coding into writing blocks and code blocks inside the chat; paid users can keep canvas for a limited time on legacy models until those are retired (ChatGPT release notes). So "ChatGPT canvas gone" and "ChatGPT canvas not working" are questions about the editor, which never showed anyone's courses. This guide is about Canvas LMS.

What MCP is, in ChatGPT terms

On its own, ChatGPT only knows what you type, paste or upload. The Model Context Protocol is a shared plug format: a service describes its tools (say, "list my courses" or "get upcoming deadlines") and any AI app that speaks MCP can call them. Anthropic released it as an open standard on November 25, 2024 (Anthropic), and the project's documentation now names ChatGPT among the AI apps that support it (modelcontextprotocol.io). Our plain-English guide to MCP covers the protocol itself.

Inside ChatGPT, a connected MCP server becomes a plugin. You mention it, ChatGPT decides which of its tools to call, the server answers, and ChatGPT uses the answer in its reply. To see that cycle in motion, try the free Tool Use Execution Loop demo; the same free course's section on tool use covers it in more depth.

Two things follow for you:

  1. The server decides what ChatGPT can reach. One built on your Canvas token can reach everything your account can. One built by a study app exposes only the tools its makers wrote.
  2. What a server returns can steer the model. OpenAI warns that an untrusted server may steal information shared through it or trick ChatGPT into using tools in unintended ways, including changing or deleting data. Its advice is to connect only servers you trust (OpenAI).

Why a Canvas access token is a bad fit for students

Instructure's own guide to access tokens, last updated October 5, 2026, is the clearest case against the DIY route (Instructure Community):

  • A token is as powerful as your login. Whoever holds it can reach the same Canvas resources you can, so Instructure says to guard it like your password and revoke it the moment you think it leaked.
  • Pasting your own token into an app breaks the policy. The guide states that generating a token to insert into an application violates Canvas API policy, and that applications are supposed to use approved sign-in methods instead.
  • Student tokens expire after 30 days. Students must set an expiration date, and Instructure sets student tokens to 30 days (new instructor tokens get 90) to limit students using them to get around assignments. A homemade connector stops working every month until you make a new token.
  • Your school can switch it off. Admins can limit token management to admins only, which greys out the Add New Access Token button.

If you made one for an experiment, delete it in Canvas under Account → Settings → Approved Integrations. For the background on keeping secrets like this safe, the free Missing Semester course has a section on security and cryptography.

Which ChatGPT plans can add a custom MCP server

Most guides stop at "it depends on your account." Here is what OpenAI's help article says, as checked on October 28, 2026:

Your ChatGPTWhat OpenAI's article says
BusinessOnly workspace admins and owners can create plugins for custom MCP servers
Enterprise or EduAdmins and owners can, and admins can grant other members permission by role
ProCustom MCP servers connect with read/fetch permissions only; full MCP is for Business and Enterprise/Edu
Free, Go or PlusNot mentioned; look for Add custom MCP server in your own Plugins menu

What that means for students: if your university gives you ChatGPT Edu, the choice belongs to the school: "Create plugins with MCPs" is a workspace permission, off by default in Enterprise workspaces, so ask your campus IT office whether students have it (OpenAI Help Center). On Pro, expect read-only use: asking about deadlines fits, but a tool that saves something, such as a note, may not run.

How to connect Canvas to ChatGPT with Lykke, step by step

Before you start

  1. A Lykke account. Sign up free; any account can connect an AI app.
  2. Your Canvas classes in Lykke. Install the Lykke Chrome extension on a computer (Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc), pick your school from the list, and open Canvas. The extension only reads and changes nothing in Canvas. Files and the class list it syncs are shared with other Lykke students in that Canvas class, including anyone who audits it.
  3. ChatGPT on the web, on a plan that shows Add custom MCP server. OpenAI's help article says custom MCP servers can't be connected on mobile.

In ChatGPT

  1. Open Plugins in the sidebar, select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server.
  2. Name it Lykke. The description is optional.
  3. Under Connection, add Lykke's MCP link: https://api.getlykke.com/notes/mcp
  4. For authentication, choose OAuth. OpenAI lists three options (OAuth, No authentication, and OAuth or no authentication); Lykke uses a sign-in.
  5. Read the risk warning, tick I understand and want to continue, and select Create as a plugin. ChatGPT then shows the tools it found.
  6. When ChatGPT sends you to Lykke, sign in and choose Allow. You can give it read-only access if you only want answers.
  7. Install the plugin if ChatGPT asks, start a new chat, type @, pick Lykke and ask "What's due this week?"

Following an older guide? If it says to turn on Developer mode first or to go to Settings → Apps → Create, it predates the Plugins menu. OpenAI's article says the current Plugins flow doesn't need Developer mode; you accept the risk warning for each server instead.

ChatGPT treats any tool that isn't marked read-only as a write action, and write actions need your confirmation by default, so saving a note through Lykke means approving it first. You can let ChatGPT remember your answer for the rest of one conversation; a new chat asks again (OpenAI).

On Lykke's free plan, ChatGPT gets your classes, deadlines, assignments and a calendar link. Scholar Plus or Luminary opens every tool, so it can also quiz you from your course and work with your notes and flashcards; an account that has never had a trial gets 7 days of Scholar Plus with its first question. Plans are on the pricing page.

What to ask ChatGPT once it can see your classes

Typing @Lykke tells ChatGPT to use it for that message. OpenAI's article says a selection covers only the message you send it with, so mention Lykke again when a follow-up needs fresh data from your classes. Prompts to try:

  • "What's due this week, and what should I work on first?" Works on the free plan. If everything looks urgent, the free Eisenhower priority demo shows how to sort urgent from important before you pick.
  • "Give me a calendar link for a study block before each deadline this week." You open each link and save the event yourself. For a calendar that fills itself from Canvas with no AI involved, see how to sync Canvas with Google Calendar.
  • "Quiz me on the last section I studied, one question at a time." Needs a paid Lykke plan or the trial. If your biology unit is on cellular respiration, say so, and ask it to tell you which step of the pathway you missed.
  • "Review my due flashcards with me and record how I do." Spacing reviews out beats rereading, as our guide to spaced repetition explains.
  • "Turn my notes on the last lecture into a one-page study guide and save it as a note." A write action, so expect ChatGPT to ask before it saves.

When a quiz exposes a gap, go to a page built for that topic. For statistics, there's a free interactive hypothesis testing visualizer for one-sample tests, and the free AP Statistics course covers the intro college-level material unit by unit.

One limit to remember: Lykke works from your last Canvas sync. If a deadline looks wrong, open Canvas in the browser with the extension installed, and it syncs again.

Keep it inside your course's AI rules

Connecting Canvas to ChatGPT changes what the assistant knows. It doesn't change what each course allows. Read the AI policy in every syllabus before you ask ChatGPT about graded work; our guide to whether using AI is cheating walks through the common policy types and what to ask your instructor when a rule is vague.

A few rules of thumb:

  • Use it to plan and practice, not to produce what you hand in, unless the assignment says otherwise.
  • Disclose when the course asks. If AI help is allowed but must be credited, here's how to cite ChatGPT in APA, MLA and Chicago.
  • Prefer connectors that only read. Lykke's Canvas connection only reads, so nothing ChatGPT does through it can submit an assignment, answer a quiz or post to a discussion. Those limits are on Lykke's house rules page.
  • Check the log. Unless you pause it, Lykke records every call ChatGPT makes with the reason it gave, and keeps it for 30 days.

If it doesn't work

  • No Add custom MCP server option: your plan or workspace doesn't offer it; see the plan table above. In a school or company workspace, ask the admin about the Create plugins with MCPs permission.
  • Lykke doesn't appear when you type @: install the plugin first. OpenAI's guide says a custom MCP plugin has to be installed before you can use it in a conversation.
  • You're on your phone: set it up in a browser on a computer. The Lykke extension also needs a computer; it doesn't run on a phone.
  • ChatGPT says it sees no classes: Lykke hasn't synced Canvas yet. Open Canvas with the extension installed, then ask again.
  • A tool answers that it isn't on your plan: the free plan covers classes, deadlines, assignments and calendar links; quizzes, notes and flashcards need Scholar Plus or Luminary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect Canvas to ChatGPT for free?

On Lykke's side, yes: its free plan connects and gives ChatGPT your classes, deadlines, assignments and a calendar link. The ChatGPT side is the limit. OpenAI's help article lists custom MCP servers for Business and Enterprise/Edu workspaces and read/fetch-only connections for Pro, and it doesn't mention the Free plan, so check whether your Plugins menu shows Add custom MCP server.

Does ChatGPT have a Canvas plugin?

Not one from Instructure that gives your ChatGPT your courses. Instructure's partnership with OpenAI puts teacher-built AI assignments inside Canvas, and its own MCP support is still being tested with a first group of schools. To bring your own classes into ChatGPT, you add an MCP server as a plugin, either one you build on a Canvas token or one from a study app that already syncs Canvas.

Can ChatGPT submit my Canvas assignments?

Not through Lykke. Lykke's Canvas connection only reads, so it can't submit work, answer quizzes or post to discussions. A homemade server built on a Canvas access token is different: Instructure says a token can reach the same Canvas resources you can, which is one reason to avoid that route.

Is it allowed to connect ChatGPT to Canvas?

Two sets of rules apply. Each course's AI policy decides whether you can use ChatGPT for its work at all. Canvas has its own rules on access tokens: Instructure's guide says making a token to paste into an application breaks Canvas API policy, and schools can turn student tokens off. A connector that needs no token avoids the second problem.

Can I connect Canvas to ChatGPT on my phone?

Set it up on a computer. OpenAI says custom MCP servers can't be connected from ChatGPT's mobile app, and the Lykke extension that syncs Canvas runs in Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc on a computer, never on a phone. Lykke itself also has an iPhone and iPad app.

What is the difference between ChatGPT canvas and Canvas LMS?

They share a name and nothing else. ChatGPT's canvas, launched by OpenAI in October 2024, was a side window for editing writing and code; since May 28, 2026, OpenAI's current models use writing blocks and code blocks in the chat instead. Canvas LMS is Instructure's learning management system, where your school posts courses, assignments and grades. Neither version of ChatGPT's editor shows your classes.
